Conclusion of the 2011 CSA Season

With the conclusion of the 2011 CSA season for Covelo, ending as it did four weeks after the final out of town boxes, Covelo Organic looks to the new season.  Preparations begin with seeds.  As seeds are the source of all crops, these preparations are the first vital step of the farms yearly  production.  At this time of year, a seed inventory is taken of all remaining seeds of the past years. This inventory leads to the seed orders which must be placed before the end of this year to ensure that orders will be filled and shipped in a timely manner.  Things are looking good here; the garlic is all up and the bell beans are covering most of the farm.

As winter weather begins, there are precautions that must be taken to protect the water risers and bibs from freezing. There are repairs to be made to equipment and maintenance to be done. I have a new covered hoophouse near my home at the farm that I will plant out with lettuces, chards, kale, and choy and sow spinach directly into beds. These will be ready in March or April for harvest.

Going forward while growing older seems to require more naps and recreation but the growing and producing of food is a rejuvenating and rewarding life.

The 2012 season begins in June. Applications will be available in April.  Happy Holidays and Go 49ers!
